Racism In Children
“The brain cannot be antiracist per se” because it never stops spotting differences and sorting them into categories.” David Amadio (Professor at New York University).
Based on this statement we can conclude that children are aware of differences in themselves and others; that’s just how the brain is wired. The color of one skin is one of the primary differences that children are conscious of. Children are not color blind. Being aware of the differences in skin color is perfectly normal, however, what matters is what they learn that these differences mean.
So, what are you teaching your children? The issue of racial identity must be addressed very early with children due to the diversity that exists in the world. Children must be taught the value of the human race and the equality that should be shown to all, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, or religion. Through books, social interactions, and dialogues, children can be taught the value of themselves and others.
